MANY OF JEHOVAH'S WITNESSES ARE CONSIDERING MOVING TO COSTA RICA TO SIMPLIFY THEIR LIVES AND SERVE WHERE THERE IS A GREATER NEED FOR KINGDOM PUBLISHERS!

If you are one of those with that desire we hope this page will be helpful to you to count the cost, investigate, plan your first trip, put you in contact with other brothers making the same type of changes, or just provide you with more info on the preaching work in Costa Rica.

Some steps you may want to take, not necessarily in order of importance:

  • Write a letter letting the brothers know your desire to serve in Costa Rica and request information about where the need is greatest and have your service commitee attach their signed letter of recommendation. Send it to the branch office of Costa Rica, Testigos de Jehova, Apartado 187-3006, Barreal Heredia. The address that appears in many of our publications.
  • Plan a trip of at least 10 days in order to visit several different areas of the country and congregations along the way. Visit the English, Chinese or Sign Language Congregation or group to meet some brothers and get a feel for the work here. Ask lots of questions about living expenses, housing, transportation, etc.
  • Visit the branch office in Heredia.
  • If you haven't already, start learning Spanish. Even if you'll be working with an English or Chinese group or congregation your day-to-day life will be 90% Spanish. FIRST Spanish Lesson here!
  • Pray to Jehovah specifically about the matter.

We're starting to work on a collection of JW World Records.

GETTING THERE:

  • Most major airlines service Juan SantaMaria International Airport in San Jose (SJO) or to Liberia (LIR). Liberia is located in the the Northwestern secion of the country.
  • When leaving San Jose for Quepos you can fly by SANSA  Click Costa Rica JW  $49 each way in low season, or Nature Air Check JW Costa Rica is a little less at $28 per person.
  • For the budget traveler you might want to take the bus. It costs about $5 for the 3-4 hour trip to Quepos. It sounds cheap but when you factor in the $10-25 taxi ride to the Coca-Cola terminal in San Jose and the 3-4 hours of waiting around for the bus, it seems cheaper to fly. Keep in mind all the limitations of weight on these flights.
  • A shuttle bus can pick you up at the airport and take you all the way to your hotel in Quepos for around $120-$150
  • Then there's always the rental car. You can expect to pay about $50 per day for a car with all of the insurance necessary. Gas prices are around $5 per gallon.
  • Follow the signs towards Jaco, Quepos, and Manuel Antonio for the 3 hour trip up and down the mountanous trip to the Pacific Coast. When you get to Jaco from San Jose, about 1 1/2 hours, you're about halfway there.

There now 5 English congregations and several groups in Costa Rica. Grecia, Quepos, La Aurora which meets at the branch Kingdom Hall in Heredia, Huacas, about 15 minutes from Tamarindo, and Limon on the Carribean coast. Write the branch about the need in English and they will point you in the right direction. They would still appreciate more workers.

There is 1 Chinese Congregation in the San Jose area. With missionaries taking the lead it will surely take off in other areas as well.

LESCO, Lenguaje de Senas Costarricense, the Sign Language of Costa Rica, is growing as well. There are now at least 5 congregations and several groups established all over the country. The closest group to Quepos is in Parrita, about 1/2 hour North.
